Voordelen waar weinig andere grondstoffen aan kunnen tippen als je het ons vraagt. Toegegeven, plastic is in heel wat gevallen de beste oplossing om een product licht en compact te verpakken. Scoort plastic echter ook zo goed als het op recycleren aankomt? Is transparant daarbij beter dan gekleurd? En wat met bioplastics? Het zijn maar enkele van de 5 meest gestelde vragen uit de wondere wereld van plastic. Benieuwd naar de antwoorden? Lees hieronder dan zeker verder.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>1. <\/strong><strong>Wat zijn de voordelen van het recycleren van plastic?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Plastic \u2013 of \u2018kunststof\u2019 zoals je wil \u2013 omvat een brede waaier aan varianten. Ze delen echter allemaal dezelfde grondstof: petroleum. Op dit moment wordt zo\u2019n 6% van alle aardolie ter wereld gebruikt om plastic van te maken. Daarvan krijgt 35 tot 45% een leven als plastic verpakking.<sup>1<\/sup> De overgrote meerderheid van al dat plastic is in theorie recycleerbaar, op voorwaarde dat je de verschillende varianten ervan niet met elkaar vermengt en dus goed sorteert.<sup>2<\/sup> Daarover lees je verderop meer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Een beetje minder rooskleurig nieuws: we consumeren aardolie veel sneller dan dat het op natuurlijke wijze wordt aangemaakt. Dat proces kan vele miljoenen jaren in beslag nemen. Aardolie is daardoor een grondstof waarmee we zuinig moeten omspringen. Er bestaan hiervoor gelukkig verschillende oplossingen. Zo kunnen we in de eerste plaats kiezen voor het <strong>verminderen<\/strong> van de plastic consumptie. Schakel je bijvoorbeeld over op een compactere doos, dan heb je minder (plastic) opvulling nodig. In de tweede plaats kan je plastic ook <strong>vervangen<\/strong> door een geheel ander materiaal. Hierbij springen dan vooral papier en karton in het oog als duurzame alternatieven. En tot slot is er natuurlijk nog het <strong>recycleren<\/strong>: een van de beste oplossingen bij het cre\u00ebren van een <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.be\/blog-be\/eu-plastic-strategie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">circulaire economie<\/a>. De recyclage zorgt voor:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Een lagere consumptie van aardolie<\/strong> \u2013 zo komen de bestaande olievoorraden minder onder druk te staan.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Een lagere CO2-uitstoot<\/strong> \u2013 de recyclage kost minder energie dan het maken van nieuw materiaal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Minder zwerfvuil<\/strong> \u2013 indien we plastic intensiever inzamelen en sorteren belandt er minder materiaal op de afvalberg.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-dotted\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:3px;border-color:#999999\"><a href=\"#\" style=\"color:#999999\">Ga naar boven<\/a><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>2. Is transparant plastic makkelijker te recycleren? <\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Je ziet nogal eens regelmatig noppenfolie of zakjes waaraan de fabrikant een groene kleurstof heeft toegevoegd. Dat groene uiterlijk maakt duidelijk aan de consument dat het plastic volledig (of gedeeltelijk) is gemaakt van gerecycleerd materiaal. De keerzijde hiervan is dat het plastic in een volgende fase moeilijker opnieuw is te recycleren. De groene kleurstof \u2018vervuilt\u2019 daarbij het proces. Wie slim is, kiest dus altijd voor gerecycleerde plastic verpakkingen die volledig transparant zijn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Voorbeelden van dit soort gerecycleerd \u00e9n transparant plastic zijn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.be\/nl_BE\/bescherming-opvulling\/luchtkussenfolie-zakjes\/luchtkussenzakje-gerecycled_OFF_BE_01635.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">luchtkussenzakjes<\/a> en <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.be\/nl_BE\/bescherming-opvulling\/noppenfolie\/luchtkussenfolie\/gerecyclede-luchtkussenfolie_OFF_BE_01234.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noppenfolie<\/a>. We gebruiken dit soort materialen onder andere om producten mee te omwikkelen en te beschermen tegen schokken.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hoe zie je nu het verschil tussen gerecycleerd plastic en virgin plastic als beide transparant zijn? Het antwoord daarop is eigenlijk \u201cniet\u201d, of toch &#8220;amper&#8221;. Het is dus altijd aangeraden om in je communicatie duidelijk te maken dat je hebt gekozen voor een milieuvriendelijk verpakkingsmateriaal. Zo weet de eindklant dat jouw transparante verpakking veel \u2018groener\u2019 is dan hij op het eerste gezicht zou denken. Een kleine uitzondering hierop vormen verpakkingen die bijvoorbeeld gevaarlijke chemische producten hebben bevat. Deze verpakkingen worden vaak via een aparte sorteercyclus verwerkt. Maar terug naar de \u2018gewone\u2019 verpakkingen nu\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Voorwaarde voor het recycleren is dat men de verschillende soorten plastic strikt gescheiden moet houden. Door het te scheiden, wordt de kwaliteit van het gerecycleerde eindproduct gegarandeerd. Om te weten w\u00e9lk type plastic je in handen hebt, moet je op de verpakking uitkijken naar een klein driehoekig symbool met een cijfer in het midden. <strong>hergebruiken<\/strong>? Terwijl je bij het recycleren het plastic materiaal gaat afbreken (bijvoorbeeld door het om te smelten), zal je bij hergebruik de oorspronkelijke functie proberen te bewaren. Een paar populaire voorbeelden hiervan zijn: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.be\/nl_BE\/opslag-magazijn\/plastic-stapelbakken_C701020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kunststof stapelbakken<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.be\/nl_BE\/rekfolie-pallets\/kunststofpallets_C607020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>palletten<\/u><\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.be\/nl_BE\/promotionele-verpakkingen\/herbruikbare-draagtassen\/draagtas-polypropyleen_PDT580583.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>draagtassen<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Een plastic draagtas van polypropyleen kan je bijvoorbeeld tot wel 400 keer hergebruiken om je boodschappen mee te doen. Is ze dan t\u00f3ch versleten, dan is ze klaar voor recyclage en krijgt ze nog makkelijk een nieuw leven. Hoe wordt plastic gerecycleerd?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In een eerste fase moet kunststof nauwkeurig per soort worden gesorteerd.<sup>3<\/sup> Een deel van die verantwoordelijkheid ligt bij de huishoudens en bedrijven. Een ander deel wordt dankzij geautomatiseerde processen uitgevoerd in de sorteercentra. Dat is bijvoorbeeld het geval voor alle materialen die we gezamenlijk in de PMD-zak weggooien.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Is het plastic eenmaal per soort gescheiden, dan kan het worden versnipperd of tot korrels vermalen en daarna gewassen. Via uiteenlopende technieken worden de korrels tot slot gesmolten en omgevormd. Zo maakt men er dan nieuwe producten mee. Hoe kunnen bioplastics worden gerecycleerd?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Naast aardolie bestaan er ook plastics op basis van biologische bronnen, planten bijvoorbeeld. In tegenstelling tot klassieke kunststoffen zijn deze biologische varianten makkelijker afbreekbaar en hernieuwbaar. Polymelkzuur, in het Engels afgekort tot PLA, is daar een voorbeeld van.<sup>4<\/sup> PLA is gemaakt van plantaardig materiaal (o.a. riet of mais) dat zich elk groeiseizoen vernieuwt. In theorie zijn deze bronnen dus onuitputbaar, \u00e9n nemen ze CO2 op uit de lucht om te groeien. Meer weten? Voorbeelden hiervan zijn het logo van <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.be\/blog-be\/ecologisch-label-verpakking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TUV Austria<\/a> of het <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rajapack.be\/blog-be\/ecologisch-label-verpakking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kiemplantlogo<\/a>. In afwachting van een duidelijke regelgeving, gooi je kleine hoeveelheden bioplastics het best bij het <strong>algemeen<\/strong> <strong>restafval<\/strong>. Een uitzondering hierop zijn de verpakkingen waarop expliciet vermeld staat dat ze \u2018biobased\u2019 zijn. Dit soort plastics heeft nagenoeg dezelfde polymerische eigenschappen als regulier plastic. Daardoor mag je ze ook bij het gewone plasticafval (PMD) sorteren. Goed om te weten: bij grote hoeveelheden kunnen bioplastics soms apart worden ingezameld door je regionale afvalophaler. Extra cijfers en weetjes over plastic<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">De eerste synthetische kunststof werd uitgevonden in 1907 door de <strong>Belgisch-Amerikaanse chemicus <\/strong>Leo Baekeland. Zijn uitvinding werd \u2018bakeliet\u2019 genoemd. Het was echter wachten tot de Tweede Wereldoorlog voordat plastics massaal werden toegepast (o.a. in auto\u2019s en artillerie).<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Het woord plastic is eigenlijk een afkorting. Het komt van <strong>\u2018thermoplastic\u2019<\/strong> wat op zijn beurt verwijst naar het feit dat deze materialen door hitte kunnen worden vervormd.<sup>2<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div><\/sup><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tegen 2030 wil de Europese Unie dat de lidstaten <strong>55% van alle plastic verpakkingen op de markt recycleerd<\/strong>. In Belgi\u00eb recycleerden we in 2019 ongeveer 40% van het plastic huishoudelijk afval en ruwweg 54% van het plastic bedrijfsafval.<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">De recyclage van PET vraagt tot <strong>60% minder energie<\/strong> dan de productie van nieuw PET materiaal.<sup>5<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div> <\/sup><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Plastic flessen worden almaar <strong>lichter<\/strong>. In 1971 woog een SPA Reine-fles van 1,5 liter nog 56,6 g. In 2013 woog diezelfde fles slechts 28,5 g. Door nieuwe technieken kunnen fabrikanten dus met minder materiaal dezelfde kwaliteit flessen maken.<sup>5<div class=\"su-spacer\" style=\"height:20px\"><\/div><\/sup><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">De productie van plastic is in 65 jaar <strong>exponentieel<\/strong> gegroeid.
